Introducing the premium wines of Mount Barker Mount Barker is located within the Great Southern Wine Region of Western Australia, 360 km south of Perth. It is the coolest viticulture region in Western Australia and is renowned world wide as a producer of the highest quality grapes and premium wines. The Department of Agriculture planted the first grapes at Mount Barker in 1965 to investigate the sustainability of the area for quality grape production. The success of these results enticed local farmers to establish their own vineyards, thereby launching a new industry for the district. In 1974 Plantagenet Wines established the fledging industries first winery in an old apple packing shed in the heart of the Mount Barker township. Soon after, Michael Goundrey started planting grapes at Windy Hill. The rest is history. Today the Mount Barker region hosts well over 1000 hectares of vines, including four wineries and seventeen producers. The industry continues to grow rapidly. Mount Barker is already widely recognised as one of the top three Riesling producing regions in Australia, and is highly regarded for the quality of it’s Shiraz. More recently, it is also becoming recognised for the outstanding quality of wines produced from the full range of premium grapes currently on the Australian market. these represent exceptional value relative to some of the better known wine regions. Wines from Mount Barker have won and continue to win, state, national and international awards. Please click on the worldwatchmedia link above to take the world first online tour. |
